Joe Biden was elected President of the United States, winning the battlefield in Pennsylvania and reaching the 270 votes needed to secure a majority in the Electoral College. Donald Trump dismissed the result, saying his opponent was "running to falsely pose as the winner". Mr Trump has won North Carolina. Georgia certified its result when an arm recount showed Mr Biden had defeated the state by just over 12,000 votes.
Mr Biden also won Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan and Arizona, according to a race call by the Associated Press. Mr Trump took to Florida, Texas, Ohio and Iowa.

The counting of votes in some states has taken a long time to complete due to the large number of postal votes being cast in the elections. More than 100 million Americans vote early or by mail.
Control of the Senate fell over two Georgia elections, which were decided in the run-off on January 5. Democratic candidates won both Georgia races, meaning the Senate would be divided equally between the parties and therefore controlled by the Democrats through tie-breaking.
